Can Red Light Help the Body Heal?

For centuries, sunlight has been associated with health and healing—but modern research is revealing that specific wavelengths of light may have unique effects of their own. Red and near-infrared light are now being studied through a therapy known as photobiomodulation, in which low levels of light are applied to the body to influence cellular activity. Research suggests that this light may affect mitochondrial energy production and cellular signaling, with potential applications for reducing inflammation and pain and supporting tissue repair.

Scientists believe red and near-infrared light may work partly by influencing the mitochondria—the structures inside our cells responsible for producing much of the energy they use. Certain wavelengths of light can affect mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling, potentially increasing ATP production and triggering biological responses involved in repair, circulation, and inflammation.

Research on red light is especially promising in several areas. Studies suggest that red and near-infrared light may help reduce pain and inflammation, particularly in some musculoskeletal conditions, while other research points to benefits for tissue repair and wound healing. It has also attracted attention in dermatology, where clinical studies have explored its ability to support skin rejuvenation and hair growth, including in people with androgenetic hair loss.

Red light therapy should not be viewed as a replacement for the foundations of good health—nutritious food, movement, rest, sunlight, and other healthy lifestyle practices still matter most. But when used appropriately, it appears to have a meaningful place as a therapeutic tool, especially for supporting recovery, reducing certain types of pain and inflammation, and promoting healthy tissue function.
